It takes many ingredients to make one, but when they all come together at the right time, a powerful storm is the result. March 14: An unusual East Coast Low creates the worst flooding for decades along the north coast of New South Wales, Australia. Big waves, full-moon tides and a storm surge kept things active on the coast while torrential rain east of the dividing range turned mountain streams into destructive torrents. August 2, 2000: Hawaii gets a wake-up call from the early arrival of hurricane Daniel. Yachts competing in the bi-annual Kenwood Cup face a mirror calm start to race week as Daniel cancels out prevailing trade winds.
