The trough that wouldn't go away

Eastern Central Australia, and particularly north-western New South Wales, received more rain than they wanted when this La Nina - like trough took up residence during the month of November

Pictured above is an animated loop (1.9mb) of satellite maps from November 6 to the 18. The images with the greatest contrast are taken at 05.30gmt , about noon in central Australia,- the hottest - and driest time of day. Images with the least contrast are taken at night when fog and other low level moisture 'fogs' the infra-red image. 

This lengthy  loop begins with one trough moving east over the Coral Sea while a front in the Great Australian Bight is enhanced by the trough immediately west of the eastern dividing range. Warm, moist air flowing over the Gulf of Carpenteria and  south into the trough takes up residence as cloud. The rain starts and refuses to give up! 

See if you can identify south east surface winds along the NSW and Queensland. These winds  feed moist oceanic air into the trough which rise as they meet the dividing range, creating plenty of rain along the eastern seaboard.
